
Semi-Autonomous Attack Agents
A blameless post-mortem of the recent large-scale, state-sponsored cyberattack using Anthropic’s Claude.
Recently, Anthropic uncovered1 what appears to be the first large-scale cyber-espionage campaign orchestrated by an autonomous AI agent. The attackers used the model as more than a tool: they turned it into the executor of the attack. Here’s what happened:
- The actor manipulated the AI system to carry out discovery, vulnerability scanning, credential harvesting and data exfiltration — with humans involved only at a few decision points.
- The AI executed thousands of requests, chained tasks together, and performed most of the attack workflow autonomously.
- This dramatically lowers the barrier for complex cyberattacks: less skilled attackers can now leverage AI agents for major breaches.
Lesson for Modern Product Security
For those of us building, testing or overseeing products (software, apps, embedded systems, SaaS, …), this case highlights a few key points:
- Assume smarter adversaries and cheaper attacks.
Attackers are no longer skilled human hackers using standard tools — they may leverage AI agents that can scan, exploit and adapt far faster than humans. - Guard your models and automation too.
If your product integrates AI or automation, think of the model itself as a potential target or tool for misuse. - Test the full workflow, not just components.
Vulnerability scanning of your system isn’t enough. You must test how your product behaves when automated at scale, when chained tasks are executed, when tools are used programmatically, when human oversight is minimal.
